Centrally located on Vancouver Island, the City of Campbell River is a growing municipality that is creating and sustaining a vibrant, healthy, and safe community for its residents. The City employs approximately 250 people in permanent positions and approximately 85 more in seasonal or auxiliary roles. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, and reporting to the Deputy City Manager, the Director of Community Planning and Livability has accountability and responsibility for Long Range Planning, Land Use Management, Sustainability, Solid Waste, Transportation Planning, Recreation and Culture. The position provides overall strategic direction and leadership for these functions and departments, with an emphasis on promoting community and social livability, environmental planning, and well-being, in alignment with the City’s Sustainable Official Community Plan. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategic goals, and cross-departmental collaboration and implementation, along with exemplary service delivery to the community. Effective relationship building and strategic communications with key community stakeholders, various levels of government, non-government organizations, senior management, Council, and other City departments are critical components of this role.

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a dynamic individual with a passion for sustainable community planning. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience at a senior management level of municipal government or other public sector organizations including at least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity. This position requires a university degree in Recreation Management, Public or Business Administration, Community Planning, Sustainability, or a related discipline, supplemented by supervisor, management, or other related studies. A post graduate degree supplemented with Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification, is considered an asset. The Director, Community Planning and Livability role requires excellent communication skills, relationship building, and political acumen with the ability to interpret local government legislation, bylaws, and policies.
