Scope

The Planning & Development Department has an opportunity for a Planner 2 position in the Current Planning - South Division. Reporting to the Current Planning Manager, this is an intermediate level planning position requiring a fair level of experience and expertise to undertake a wide range of planning assignments with some responsibility to coach and mentor junior-level planning professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, research and provide analysis on a wide range of planning issues.
  • Lead the review and processing of a variety of land development/zoning applications and enquiries.
  • Negotiate and resolve complex planning issues with applicants to optimal outcomes.
  • Coordinate with other City departments on development/zoning applications.
  • Respond to enquiries from Council and the public.
  • Write comprehensive reports to Council and preparing correspondence to the public.
  • Other duties include conducting site inspections, attending public information meetings, preparing minor text amendments to the Zoning By-law and researching and analyzing specific planning issues.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a relevant Master’s Degree and a minimum of 3 years experience in the planning profession.

OR

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Planning or in a related discipline with supplementary courses recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners as fulfilling the requirement for membership and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the planning profession.
  • Significant experience at the intermediate Professional Planner level (e.g. Planner 1) is considered a strong asset.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is an asset.
  • Directly related planning experience within the public sector is considered an asset.

  • The ability to handle multiple priorities and projects.
  • As a professional Planner be able to negotiate effectively, make sound decisions and demonstrate strong analytical abilities.
  • Display a strong sense of customer service and able to effectively work with members of the public.
  • Strong leadership abilities and able to mentor and guide junior-level planners.
  • In-depth knowledge of planning principles and ensure the highest levels of development quality are produced.
