Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

Are you a dynamic individual with considerable local government development planning experience? Do you also possess excellent interpersonal and leadership skills? Then we are interested in hearing from you. We are looking for a Planning Coordinator to serve in a vital leadership role within our Land Use Services Department.

Reporting to the Manager, Community Planning, the Planning Coordinator works in an administrative, technical and supervisory capacity, overseeing the work of planning staff and key projects, as directed by the manager, and acts as a liaison and resource between the CVRD divisions and departments. The current focus of the planning coordinator will be on the modernization of standard operating procedures and implementation of a Land Management system, and development of a new zoning bylaw for all CVRD electoral areas.

Qualifications:

  • University graduation in a related field plus a graduate degree in Community and Regional Planning or related field.
  • Membership, or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and Planning Institute of BC.
  • A minimum of five years of related experience in the field of planning, including both current and long range planning, preferably in a BC local government setting.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience with staff mentoring, supervision, training and performance management

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Hours of Work: The typical work week is 35 hours and may occasionally include evenings and weekends as operationally needed. Flextime is offered with this position.

Salary: The CVRD offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience plus a comprehensive benefits package including extended health/dental /insurance, pension, and paid vacation.
