Overview
Join Olga Rivkin and Michael McAllister from Lidstone & Company for an informative, “user-friendly” and entertaining session on a variety of legal issues and case studies relating to water (rivers, streams, waterfront property, flooding, damage, liability) & land (subdivision, zoning, covenants, private property and First Nations development).
Julian Dunster, of Dunster & Associates Environmental Consultants, lecturer, and author of Trees & the Law, will present on the obligations of local government in relation to tree management and potential negligence. Topics include assessing and managing risk, liability, surveys, limits of bylaws, and how design affects all of these. Examples and case studies will be presented.

Olga is an experienced solicitor, attentive to client needs, nuanced and detailed in her approach. She advises local governments and other public entities on a variety of topics, including land development, subdivision, real estate, highways, remediation, water, infrastructure and general day to day operations. Olga has represented local governments in numerous negotiations, drafted a variety of agreements and assisted with project management. In all matters, Olga endeavors to provide practical advice and make complex matters clear and simple. She publishes and presents extensively on issues of importance to local governments.
Micheal McAllister

Michael is Senior Counsel. He has practised law exclusively on local government matters since 1988. Michael was born in Nelson, B.C. and is a lifelong British Columbia resident. Michael attended the University of British Columbia where he received a Bachelor of Social Work in 1977 and his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1987. After articling with Davis & Company and being called to the Bar in British Columbia in 1988, he joined Murdy & McAllister. Michael’s practice has evolved over his many years at Murdy & McAllister. Over the past decade, Michael’s practice has narrowed to working exclusively on solicitor matters, focusing on general advice to local government and complex land development.
Michael is also active in the Municipal Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association. Throughout his career, he has given many lectures to a variety of continuing education programs. Michael loves running, music and old movies. He travels to Europe with his family frequently and spends as much time as possible at their home on Saltspring Island.

With almost four decades of consulting experience in forestry, land use planning, environmental consulting, and arboriculture, Dr. Dunster is one of Canada’s foremost consulting arborists. His work has garnered many awards and he is recognised as an international expert on tree risk assessment. Dr. Dunster provides expert advice for a wide range of clients in both the public and private sectors. He has a Doctorate in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo, and a Masters degree in forestry from the University of British Columbia.
