As part of Gastown Public Spaces Plan process, Gastown’s iconic Water Street has temporarily been transformed into a pedestrian zone for July and August 2024. Led by City of Vancouver staff, this tour will explore the new, vibrant public spaces in the pedestrian zone and discuss the planning and programming processes that brought this project to life.

During this tour, we will stroll along Water Street and Maple Tree Square to share the key public space design, placemaking and transportation elements that support Gastown’s newly pedestrianized spaces. The tour will reflect on the core project goals and objectives for the longer-term planning process and highlight different needs and experiences within Gastown’s public spaces, including how the City is working to create spaces that are safe and inclusive for different communities. We will emphasize the importance of stewardship and collaborative partnerships in delivering and maintaining the pedestrian zone, and in creating more welcoming environments for all users. The tour will also cover various ways the pilot will be monitored and evaluated, and how learnings from this pilot will shape the longer-term vision for the neighbourhood.

While this is a free event, please RSVP Here to reserve your spot. The tour will start at the corner of Richards and Water Street, and end at Maple Tree Square.
