District of Hope

Director of Community Development

Situated at the confluence of the mighty Fraser River and the smaller Coquihalla River, the District of Hope (www.hope.ca) is host to some of Western Canada’s most breath-taking scenery. Part of the Fraser Valley Regional District, it supports a fulltime population of 6,200 residents, and offers a balanced combination of strong retail and service sectors, plus an abundance of world recognized recreational opportunities that provide a strong base for sustainable growth. Known for its beauty, unassuming charm, and untapped potential, this magnificent rural “can do” community is recognized as one of the best locations to live, work and play and its social services, infrastructure, and lifestyle alternatives provide a very strong base for sustainable growth. Some of our amenities include a modern recreation complex, a curling rink, baseball diamonds, skateboard park, golf & country club, a hospital, an extended care facility, a public health centre, medical clinics, chiropractic care, opticians, and more. With the goal of preserving and enhancing services for all its residents and visitors and taking the Planning Department to the next level, the District is looking to attract a progressive and accomplished operations professional as their Director of Community Development.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Community Development is the District’s Chief Planner, overseeing an integrated approach to development and policy planning for the District. Your responsibilities include overall responsibility for the development and delivery of standardized frameworks, in addition to policies and guidelines to ensure land use occurs in accordance with the Official Community Plan. As Director, you will hold responsibility for all developmentrelated projects and provide strategic advice and direction to the development process. In addition, you will advise planning and building staff on development applications and processes, coordinate planning issues with other departments and jurisdictions, participate in public and technical meetings, and represent the planning department at Council meetings and outside agencies. You will also work with District Bylaw Enforcement on relevant zoning and usage compliance issues. The Director of Community Development will also be appointed the District’s Approving Officer.

You likely have a Planning Degree coupled with eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners, or other relevant qualifications. In addition, you have a minimum of 5 to 10 years Planning and Development leadership experience in a municipal Planning or related private sector environment. You are known as a decisive, take charge, strategic thinker with strong visionary, human resource, and negotiation skills. You are a consensus builder with well-honed report writing skills and recognized for your business integrity. You are politically astute and fully conversant with the challenges facing growth communities and recognize the importance of impeccable customer service delivery. Your impeccable people skills are your trademark and the ability to deal effectively with all levels of clients both internal and external, staff and Council. You bring enlightened departmental leadership as well as strategic focus to existing operations.

Are you ready to take the next step in your municipal management career and join one of Western Canada’s sought after communities?
