ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY 

The primary responsibility of this senior professional and manager is to prepare and steward the Community plans as adopted by Council.  Relying on a broad range of expertise such as community planning, regulatory planning, urban design, etc., this land planning professional oversees permanent staff as well as a variety of project teams to provide the Director of Planning & Capital Projects and Council with a full range of planning studies, recommendations, lands use policies, by-law amendments and interpretation of applicable laws.  The individual in this role requires extremely strong project and staff management skills, negotiation and relationship building in addition to analysis and reporting.

 Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

• Stewards Squamish Nation’s community plans.
• Advises Council.
• Manages relationships required to execute community plans.
• Coordinates the project start-up of approved studies, developments or policy related work.
• Oversees policy and bylaw development.
• Oversees development of standardized frameworks, policies and guidelines for planning & policy issues.
• Manages Staff.
• Jointly manages budgetary strategies for approved studies and plans, in association with the Director.
• Supervises the Health and Safety of Employees and adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
• Participates as a member of the Planning & Capital Projects Team.

 Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:

• Master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning or other relevant discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• 4 - 5 years related experience in the majority of specialties listed in job description including project and staff management, community planning, regulatory planning, urban design.
• Knowledge of indigenous community planning issues, a background in indigenous community planning, as well as knowledge of regulatory environments in diverse jurisdictions is preferred. Strong project and staff management, oral and written communication skills and planning studies and drafting is required.
• Previous experience in a land development government setting for first nations would be an asset.
• A member in good standing with the Planning Institute of British Columbia.
• Previous experience working in a First Nations community is preferred.
• Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
• Must be able to travel.
• Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
• Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5, Class 7N may be considered.
• Must provide a valid Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
• May to willing to consider a Bachelor’s Degree plus 6 – 7 years of relevant/related experience.

Salary: $84,683 to $99,627 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits program.
