Delta’s Development Department is a growing and performance-driven team that has exceeded its first-year Provincial Housing Target, adopted a new visionary Official Community Plan, and successfully implemented several bold housing policy initiatives. The City of Delta is seeking an individual with professional planning experience to join the Development Department and help support priority development projects in Delta.

Reporting to the Manager of Priority Projects, the Planner 1 will assist in processing development and land use applications of a minor to moderate nature, including subdivisions, rezonings, land use permits, and other application types for residential, industrial, agricultural, and mixed-use projects. The Planner 1 will support the review and coordination of priority development applications and may assist with projects that advance Council priorities, including housing initiatives and other strategic development opportunities.

The Planner 1 will work collaboratively with internal departments, external consultants, applicants, and the public to review applications, prepare technical comments, and assist in the preparation of reports and recommendations. The position may also support planning initiatives and policy work related to housing and community development. Work assignments will be based on departmental priorities and the incumbent’s skills and experience.

We are looking for a creative, analytical, and detail-oriented team member who is a critical thinker, self-starter, and strong communicator. In addition to a degree in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or a related field, the ideal candidate will have:

  • In-depth knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods applicable to contemporary land use planning and urban design.
  • Experience assisting with the coordination and review of development projects in the private and/or public sectors.
  • Experience reviewing development applications and preparing technical comments and reports for applications of varying types and complexity.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate work and maintain effective working relationships with professional and technical staff, external consultants, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience engaging with stakeholders and the public.
  • Experience providing professional service to clients and customers.
  • Knowledge of relevant land use planning regulations, policies, bylaws, and legislation in British Columbia.

Membership or eligibility for Candidate Membership with the Planning Institute of British Columbia and the Canadian Institute of Planners is required. Membership or eligibility for membership in the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects and/or the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects is considered an asset. This position requires a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

The City of Delta provides a competitive salary of $49.65 - $58.66 (2024 Rates) (+$3.00/hour*) (commensurate with experience) and an excellent benefits package including the Municipal Pension Plan.  Interested applicants are requested to apply online at www.delta.ca/employment, to competition number #26-93 EX by March 27, 2026.
