Habitat: 50 Years of Transforming Cities in Canada and the World
UN Habitat & UBC Symposium
October 21st - 22nd 2026
9:00 AM - 4:30 PM PST
CPL Units: 8.75

In 1976, more than 2,000 delegates from 130 countries gathered in Vancouver for the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements — the largest UN conference of its time. Half a century after the Vancouver Declaration first established adequate housing as a basic human right, UBC and UN-Habitat return to the city where it began — to take stock of what cities have become, and to chart what they must become next.

Join us for a 2-day, interactive symposium that will bring together urban planners, policymakers, international NGOs, Habitat ‘76 participants, UBC students and faculty researchers working on housing and sustainable urban development solutions.

Featured panelists include:

  • Anacláudia Rossbach, Under-Secretary-General & Executive Director of UN-Habitat (Nairobi, Kenya)
  • Omar Siddique, Head of Office, UN-Habitat Canada (Montreal, Canada)
  • Lucy Earle, International Institute for Environment and Development (London, UK)
  • Bish Sanyal, Ford International Professor of Urban Development and Planning, MIT (Cambridge, USA)
  • Sheela Patel, Director, Society for Promotion of Area Resource Centres (Mumbai, India)
  • Sri Husnaini Sofjan, Senior Program Advisor and Strategist, Huairou Commission (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
  • Andy Yan, Associate Professor, Urban Studies & Director, City Program, SFU (Burnaby, Canada)
  • Alex Flynn, Associate Professor, Law & Director, Housing Research Collaborative, UBC (Vancouver, Canada)
