The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) provides regional governance and services throughout Vancouver Island’s beautiful central east coast. Communities within the region include the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, as well as seven unincorporated Electoral Areas. Established in 1967, the RDN is one of British Columbia’s most populous Regional District throughout the province and home to more than 170,000. It is also an award-winning organization, and develops and oversees innovative programs that effectively steward the region’s environment and resources, and create a positive quality of life for residents.

The General Manager, Planning and Development (the General Manager) directs, coordinates, plans and oversees staff activities related to a highly diverse portfolio that includes community planning, regional growth management, building inspection, bylaw enforcement, and energy and sustainability functions. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and as a member of the Regional District of Nanaimo’s leadership team, the General Manager also provides professional advice to the Board and Committees as it relates to the service areas, and carries out the relevant policy direction of the Board. In order to effectively deliver services and provide sound advice to the Board, the General Manager must also work closely and collaboratively with all members of the RDN, as well as other partners such as local First Nations and the provincial government, among others.

As the ideal candidate, you are a proven leader with a passion for public service. You are a creative, innovative and strategic thinker, an outstanding communicator, and have a demonstrated track record in working collaboratively with a wide variety of partners in order to develop sustainable solutions. A contemporary leader, you are well-versed in effecting change to improve operations and service delivery. You have a reputation for being an experienced manager who can lead and engage a diverse team of functional professionals and experts, and coach and mentor for future succession. In addition, you bring an exceptional reputation for achieving results in a multi-stakeholder environment, taking a systems view of issues. Your years of taking on progressively senior roles are augmented by a degree in planning, architecture or similar. A Registered Professional Planning designation is required.
