The Planning and Development Department is looking for a regular full-time Planner 3 to join their highly collaborative team and play a pivotal role in advancing long range and land use planning work to help shape the future growth of the city.

Reporting to the Manager, Long Range & Community Planning, this is advanced professional planning work at the working supervisory level. This position is responsible for overseeing and guiding staff engaged in planning projects involving complex problems and politically sensitive issues. You will plan, develop, and implement new policies; prepare related reports; liaise and coordinate with internal and external contacts; and participate in formulating, implementing, and amending long range and land use plans, policies, and processes such as the Official Community Plan, neighbourhood structure plans, master plans, neighbourhood needs assessments, and other long range policy and planning initiatives.

This role will require strong understanding of best practices for urban design, planning, and zoning; excellent written, presentation, and communication skills; and the ability to undertake research and apply outcomes. Additionally, it will include undertaking public engagement activities; representing the department in advising on policy and planning matters; consulting, liaising, participating, and coordinating activities for various meetings as required; and attending City Council and Committee meetings to make presentations and respond to questions.

You will have a University graduation in an appropriate discipline, plus a post-graduate degree in Planning and considerable related professional planning experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, methods and procedures applicable to municipal planning. A strong project management skill set, effective communication skills and the ability to exercise judgement in complex problem solving is required to be successful in this role.   Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of B.C. or the Canadian Institute of Planners and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of BC is also required.  Attendance at evening Council, committee and public meetings is required for this role.

Salary:

$55.19 to $65.35 per hour

(Pay Grade 33 – January 2021 rates)

Hours of Work:

The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately each three-week scheduling cycle.
