POSITION OVERVIEW

The Planning Department at the City of Maple Ridge is actively seeking a valuable addition to our Development & Environment section. This role presents an exceptional chance for an enthusiastic individual to become part of a dynamic team within a bustling municipality undergoing substantial growth. In this capacity, the incumbent will be responsible for evaluating a diverse array of planning-related submissions spanning neighbourhoods that range from our rapidly evolving town centre to rural residential areas. Planning Technician role will encompass the preparation of reports on these development applications and other pertinent planning subjects, which will be presented to the City Council. Notably, this position involves extensive engagement with the public and the development community to facilitate the execution of the City's Official Community Plan, zoning bylaw, and various other bylaws and policies.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

University degree in a planning related discipline such as Environmental Studies, Urban Geography plus related office experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the zoning bylaw and of other bylaws, regulations, policies and procedures governing the work performed.
  • Knowledge of departmental functions, objectives and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of planning practices.
  • Sound knowledge of urban design principles and practices.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret mapping (such as, topographical, cadastral, and planimetric), engineering and architectural plans, and understand specifications.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise written reports.
  • Ability to operate MS Windows based programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public.
  1. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • One year of hands-on experience processing development applications.
    • Proficient in working within a governmental environment (municipal, federal, etc.).
