Reporting to the Manager, Parks, the Section Manager, Urban Forestry & Natural areas is responsible for leading a team of technical and professional staff engaged in urban forestry and natural areas management. As the Section Manager, you will develop and implement strategies, plans, policies and procedures related to forest health, ecological restoration, recreation trail building and maintenance, habitat protection, invasive species management and wildfire risk mitigation. You will also provide strategic leadership, establish collaborative relationships with partners and stakeholders, and ensure effective public engagement and consultation related to a broad range of urban forestry and natural areas initiatives. This position is also responsible for developing and overseeing capital and operating budgets, managing staff and equipment resources, and working with a wide range of consultants, contractors, volunteer and stakeholder groups to ensure effective program delivery.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures and best management practices related to urban forestry and arboriculture, natural areas management, invasive species management, safety and wildfire risk mitigation, ecological restoration, and natural areas recreation.
  • Considerable knowledge of the regulations, policies, by-laws and objectives related to the work.
  • Considerable experience in budget management, contract management, project management and construction management.
  • Considerable experience in leading public and stakeholder engagement, consultation, facilitation and negotiation.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and management skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing relationships and working collaboratively and cohesively with a wide variety of stakeholders and partners, elected officials, local First Nations, and all levels of government and non-government organizations.
  • Strong decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Thorough working knowledge of occupational health and safety, human resources and labour relations practices and procedures; preferably within a unionized environment in the public sector.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and oral, including preparing technical reports and presenting to large groups.

Qualifications:

You have graduated from a recognized university with a degree in in biology, urban forestry, ecology, natural resource management or related discipline, with considerable related experience in urban forestry, arboriculture and natural areas management. You are registered or eligible for registration with a related professional association such as, the College of Applied Biology of BC, the Association of BC Forest Professionals, the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects (BCSLA), Planning Institute of BC (PIBC), or Engineers & Geoscientists BC and have a valid BC driver’s license.
