Senior Planner - Housing Policy, Initiatives and Climate Change
Regular Full-Time ($54.69/hour - $60.68/hour – 2023 Rates)

The District of Oak Bay is a picturesque seaside community located within the Greater Victoria Region, with a population of +18,000. While offering all the amenities of a large metropolitan urban centre, Oak Bay has succeeded in maintaining all the peacefulness and charm of a small town. Residents enjoy an exceptional quality of life, with miles of spectacular West Coast shoreline, brilliant beaches, parks and greenspace, quaint tree-lined streets and vibrant, boutique villages just beyond their doorsteps.

The Community Building & Planning Services Department is pleased to invite applications for a newly created Senior Planner - Housing Policy, Initiatives and Climate Change position. The Senior Planner will act as the primary individual responsible for the project management, coordination, and delivery of housing and planning policy initiatives including infill housing, secondary suites incentive program, leading village area planning, and other related planning policy work. Additional responsibilities include serving as the primary point of contact within the District for connecting climate change initiatives across departments, as well as external organizations and community groups.

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Community Building and Planning Services, the Senior Planner is a generalist who will focus on the development, facilitation of and implementation of several key Council Priority Projects including infill housing, village area planning and responding to regulatory changes at the provincial level. In addition, the position will coordinate municipal climate action priorities to advance the District’s response to climate change through policy development and implementation.

The employee must use considerable initiative and judgement in carrying out the required tasks within this program. This is an advanced planning position that requires a sound understanding of planning policy, community planning, housing policy, climate change and sustainability issues, political acumen, and requires innovative thinking on complex policy issues, specifically planning
policy, including housing, community planning, sustainability, and climate change.

Our ideal candidate has a university degree from a recognized institution in Land Use Planning or a similar field (urban planning, geography, environmental science) with a minimum of six years of progressive experience in professional planning in a land use or community planning, preferably at the local government level. Membership or eligibility for membership with the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is required. This position is represented by CUPE Local 374.

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer a supportive and collaborative work environment with continued career development and professional development opportunities. As an employer of choice, the District of Oak Bay is committed to fostering a culture of empowerment, accountability, and teamwork.

If your qualifications and experience align with our needs, we want to hear from you! Please apply in confidence by 4:30pm on July 13, 2023 with a resume and cover letter to:
