About the Opportunity
Our fast-paced Vancouver office is looking to add an early-career, dedicated, and enthusiastic Planner or Planning Technician to our transportation planning team. The position is based in Vancouver, with the opportunity for hybrid work (remote and in office). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a support role – working toward increased responsibilities – while directly contributing to the growth of Urban Systems’ established transportation planning services.
The Urban Systems planning team provides professional planning services to clients dealing with the interconnections between governance, policy, finance, community design, land use, mobility, and infrastructure. As communities continue to become more complex, so too do the planning profession and the needs of our clients. We are looking for someone who would like to start a career in planning and is motivated to learn about transportation planning and work with local communities across British Columbia.
Typical duties may include:
- Providing planning support on a broad range of transportation planning projects, including multi-modal and active transportation planning for provincial and local governments, regional transportation authorities, Indigenous, and private sector clients across British Columbia and Western Canada.
- Assisting in the preparation of planning documents, reports, research, and technical studies.
- Developing spreadsheets for statistical analyses.
- Providing interpretations of legislation, regulations, and policies.
- Preparing and synthesizing public engagement materials such as presentations, open house panels, newsletters, brochures, and community surveys.
- Attending and supporting site visits, client and public meetings, engagement, workshops, and open houses as required.
About You
Our preferred candidate will have a degree or diploma in a relevant area of study (planning, urban studies, public policy, geography, environmental studies, etc.), although we are always open to considering strong candidates from other backgrounds. The candidate should have a keen interest in providing transportation planning services to a variety of clients, including municipalities, regional districts, transportation authorities, provincial governments, Indigenous communities, and private sector community builders.
We’re looking for the following skills, traits, and interests:
- A passion for creating more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable communities, with a particular interest in active and multi-modal transportation.
- A desire to gain exposure to a wide range of experiences and facets of the transportation planning profession.
- The ability to apply technical knowledge of applicable policies, regulations, standards, processes, and best practices between jurisdictions.
- Proven ability to conduct research and analysis, including the collection and analysis of qualitative and/or quantitative survey data.
- Excellent communication skills with demonstrated proficiency in writing, verbal, and visual communication, including effectively communicating with different groups of people and translating technical jargon into plain language.
- An ability to thrive in a fast-paced and self-directed work environment, take initiative, ask questions, connect with the team, and consistently deliver high-quality work that exceeds client expectations.
- A belief in the value of teamwork and demonstrated ability to collaborate, learn and think creatively when working with a range of perspectives.
