The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is located on the beautiful central east coast of Vancouver Island, incorporating the
municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, and seven unincorporated electoral areas that lie between
Cassidy to the south and Bowser to the north. The RDN is situated within the traditional territories of several First Nations, including
Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As and Qualicum First Nations and recognizes their rich cultural heritage. The RDN benefits from inclusive
First Nations governance with strong collaboration at all levels in addressing important and pressing issues.


The RDN is home to approximately 170,000 people and is growing at a very rapid pace. Growth is due in part to a mild coastal climate,
diverse ecosystems, and landscapes from the Salish Sea to rugged mountains, easy access to a range of outdoor recreation, and a high
quality of life.


About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Long Range Planning, Energy + Sustainability, the Senior Planner contributes to the e^ective operation of the
Planning Department through managing of long-range planning projects, developing RDN planning policy and representing the RDN in
a variety of public forums. This position provides leadership, direction and support to the Planning Department by assisting team
members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives. This position may also provide
supervision and training of Planning staff.


The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in land development, planning, and/or related discipline with a minimum of ten
(10) years of related experience in community or regional planning, preferably at the local government level, or a master’s degree in
planning along with seven (7) years of the above-noted experience. The successful candidate will have the knowledge and understanding
of the principles, best practices and objectives of regional land use planning and design with the ability to build collaborative
relationships and inspire trust. The role requires excellent interpersonal communication and team-building skills, with a commitment
to building a positive and e^ective organizational culture. Eligibility for membership in Planning Institute of BC (PIBC) is required.


This is a permanent full-time (35 hours per week) Union position. The (2024) rate of pay is $48.09 to $50.62. The position oBers an
attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian
Union of Public Employees, Local 401. This position requires a Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
