Reporting to the General Manager of Operational Services, the Director of Calgary Transit is accountable for and oversees the strategic direction and operational management of the Business Unit.  Calgary Transit is a public facing area responsible for the delivery of public transportation on an integrated bus and light rail transit system. In alignment with the Corporate Strategy and Department goals, the Director provides oversight and direction for 2800 employees working in the following areas: Transit Service Delivery, Transit Service Design, Transit Service Vehicles, Transit Service Systems and Transit Service Support and Control.

As a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), you will be expected to foster an inclusive leadership approach that promotes equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as psychological and physical safety. As a strategic thinker, you will possess political acumen and have experience in leading transformational change and enabling innovation.  Primary duties include:

  • Represent Calgary Transit at Council / Committee meetings, public functions, etc.; working closely with other business units within the Operational Services Department and The City to plan, develop and operate the public transportation systems.
  • Manage ongoing, day to day operational concerns involved with the provision of high-quality public service and development of operational policies and strategic plans.
  • Work with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 583 (ATU) and other unions regarding labour relations, agreements, grievances and policies.
  • Oversee all program/service activities including purchasing, maintaining and servicing all buses, light rail vehicles; manage safety and environmental programs; maintain Calgary Transit’s infrastructure including buildings, shops, track and way, traction power, signaling and communications systems; develop vehicle and personnel schedules; conduct market research and design marketing and promotional programs.
  • Represent Calgary Transit in the Canadian Urban Transit Association and other industry organizations as required.

Qualifications

  • A Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or degree in a complimentary field (for example; Business, Engineering, Planning, or related.) with at least 10 years of progressively responsible management experience in a complex organization.

  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.

  • Experience creating and executing action plans based upon business analytics, pro formas, and aligned with corporate objectives.

  • Aligning with City corporate values, you will have demonstrated strategic thinking abilities, change management skills, exceptional communication skills, a focus on customer service, and the ability to create collaborative working environments which empower others to make sound decisions.

  • Public sector experience, particularly municipal government experience in a highly unionized environment, is a preferred asset.

Compensation: Director Band 1 $155,500 - 240,000 per annum

Days of Work: This position works a 5 day work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
