About the Opportunity
Urban Systems is currently looking for a planning student to join our Vancouver community planning practices for a four-month paid internship. The position will be based in our Vancouver office. The placement will run from approximately May to August 2023.
Our planning practice excels at providing professional planning services to clients who are dealing with the interconnections between governance, policy, finance, community design, land use, mobility, and infrastructure. More and more of our clients are looking for innovative ideas and customized solutions based on an integrated perspective of these fields.
We strive to build internship opportunities that are exciting, challenging, rewarding, and offer exposure to the wide-ranging nature of planning. Our goal is for you to come away with new points of view and an enhanced skillset that will serve you well in your future career. In general, you can expect to be involved in the following kinds of activities:
- Providing planning support on a broad range of community planning projects (including but not limited to land use planning, parks and recreation, economic development, tourism, transportation, and community governance)
- Conducting research, preparing background reports, and supporting projects for local government, land development, and First Nations clients (e.g., land use reports, conceptual plans, studies, bylaws, etc.)
- Assisting in the preparation of planning documents, technical studies and preparing presentations for clients and public meetings
- Collaborating with the existing team to develop public engagement materials such as open house panels, newsletters, brochures and community surveys
- Attending and supporting site visits, public meetings, engagement, workshops, and open houses as required
About You
This position is for students currently enrolled in a planning program accredited by the Canadian Institute of Planners (e.g., M.A., M.U.P., M.Sc., M.Pl., MPlan., M.E.S., M.U.R.P.). That being said, we are always open to considering strong candidates from other backgrounds, such as a program in social sciences with course work in planning or human geography. - A willingness and desire to work in a variety of practices areas for a variety of clients
- Excellent verbal communications skills, an ability to write well, and experience translating technical jargon into plain-language materials
- Proven ability to conduct research and analysis, including the collection and analysis of qualitative and/or quantitative survey data
- An ability to thrive in a self-directed work environment, take initiative and consistently deliver high-quality work
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment with a team of professionals who are deeply committed to exceeding client expectations
- Skilled at connecting with people, asking questions, and working on teams
