The PIBC Vancouver Island North Chapter is excited to bring you Part 2 of our two-part walking tour series in Downtown Nanaimo.

We will stroll around downtown Nanaimo to explore past challenges, current projects, and exciting future opportunities associated with our streets and waterfront. Topics we will cover include: the redevelopment of the City-owned lands at the location of the former Jean Burns building, along the waterfront, and throughout downtown; the redevelopment of downtown streets including Commercial Street, Front Street, and Terminal Avenue and the incorporation of Regional District Transit facilities into our street designs; and we will also hear about the occupation of a portion of the downtown waterfront property by Tent City in 2018.

All participants joining the walking tour will meet at 3:00 PM on the China Steps, located at the intersection of Victoria Crescent and Albert Street. There is ample parking throughout downtown Nanaimo. We recommend the Harbour Front Parkade, with entrances at 121 Front Street and 51 Gordon Street, as it is located near the starting and ending points of the tour.

After the main event, we invite participants to stick around Downtown Nanaimo to visit the Commercial Street Night Market! The Night Market is one of downtown Nanaimo’s most popular events, and occurs every Thursday night in the summer from 5-9:00PM. The Market includes nearly 200 artisan vendors, more than a dozen food trucks, multiple musical entertainers, and a kids’ zone.

The walking tour event is limited to 20 participants so please register early. The Night Market, however, is open to all!

Come with your curiosity, questions, and ideas, as well as some shopping bags for perusing the Night Market! This learning opportunity is worth 2.0 PIBC CPL units.
