Urban Design: Introduction to Placemaking

Placemaking is the practice of designing the urban environment and thus influencing the way in which people interact and engage with public space and each other. This one-day placemaking course provides an introduction to both urban design theory and also several applied techniques, leading toward an essential understanding of placemaking. Students will engage with fundamentals such as free-hand diagramming and site analysis as methods of analyzing, evaluating, and recording the urban environment. The course will include some field work and site investigation where students will have the opportunity to apply these skills to an urban challenge, and work collaboratively toward a creative solution.
